Nurturing Talent through Apprenticeships - EOM Electrical Contractors Ltd

Established in 1995 by a team of electricians in Mid Wales, EOM Electrical Contractors Ltd (EOM) has grown into a trusted provider of electrical, plumbing, heating, and maintenance services. Operating from its headquarters in Newtown, EOM employs 35 staff members and boasts an impressive client portfolio, including Housing Associations, Powys County Council, Heart of Wales Property Services, and various commercial and private clients throughout Mid Wales.

EOM has become a leader in emerging technologies, excelling in the installation of EV charging points, Solar PV systems, Air Source heat pumps, and extensive lighting and monitoring systems using LoRaWAN technology. The company stays at the forefront of innovation by attending manufacturer updates, promotional events, and professional forums. EOM has even shared its expertise by presenting LoRaWAN case studies at Aberystwyth University’s Innovation Centre.

For the past eight years, EOM has partnered with Pathways Training at Newtown College to deliver its apprenticeship programmes, continuing its long-standing commitment to skills development that began with Coleg Powys prior to its merger with NPTC Group. Currently, EOM supports five apprentices across the electrical, plumbing, and carpentry trades. Each apprentice benefits from a £100 toolkit upon joining, subsidised safety footwear and workwear, workplace mentorship, and wages above the minimum standard.

In an area with a limited pool of potential employees and a national shortage of skilled tradespeople, EOM recognises that investing in apprenticeships is critical to achieving its business objectives. The company views its staff as its most valuable asset and is committed to growing, developing, and retaining skilled professionals.

Beyond supporting apprenticeships, EOM is passionate about inspiring the next generation of tradespeople. To raise awareness of renewable energy solutions, the company has delivered presentations to primary school pupils on Solar, Wind, and alternative energy sources. EOM has also partnered with three local schools to offer work experience opportunities, hoping to ignite interest in the sector and encourage young individuals to pursue careers in the trades—potentially as future EOM apprentices.

EOM’s dedication to training and development, coupled with its forward-thinking approach to technology, makes it a shining example of how businesses can thrive while investing in their workforce and the community.
